Wednesday/Thursday 9/26/27 Group Activities-Chapter 4 Of Mice and Men
Group 1: Sketching Crooks' Bunk: You may do this on paper or using the Google Draw feature of Google Docs. Look closely at the description of Crooks' room at the beginning of Chapter 4 (page 66-67). What are his possessions? How are they arranged? What do you learn about Crooks from looking at his room? Create a sketch of the room. Label each item and include a key that explains what each item in the room reveals about Crooks' personality.
Group 2: Symbols in Crooks' bunk-Glasses: Steinbeck develops several symbols and symbolic uses of language in this chapter. Look closely at the mention sof Crooks' glasses on pages 67, 68, and 72. What might these glasses represent? Why does he need them? What do they help him see? What's going on when he puts them on or takes them off? How might they influence his interaction with Lennie? Create a document or powerpoint slide to show to the class about this.
Group 3: Symbols in Crooks' Bunk-Books: Steinbeck develops several symbols and symbolic uses of language in this chapter. Look at the initial description of Crooks' room (page 66-67) and the reasons why Crooks reads (pages 72-72). What books does Crooks read? What do you think books represent to him? How does this influence what he says to Lennie on page 74? Create a document or powerpoint slide or presentation of some kind to share this with the class.
Group 4: Symbols in Crooks' Bunk-Dogs: Steinbeck develops several symbols and symbolic uses of language in this chapter. Look closely at the mentions of dogs in this chapter, and consider the appearance of dogs in Chapters 2 and 3. Why was Lennie in the barn in the first place? Look closely at how he speaks about his pup-what does this tell you about him? How does Crooks say Lennie will be treated if George leaves him? Why might Crooks be able to identify with this treatment? How do people treat him? What might all these mentions of dogs be foreshadowing? Create a document or powerpoint slide or presentation of some kind to share this with the class.
Group 5: Crooks' Bunk and the American Dream-Look closely at Crooks' reaction when Lennie shares his and George's dream with him. Why do you think he reacts this way? Look closely at Crooks' description of his father's farm. How does this farm compare with Lennie and George's dream? You could maybe create a Venn Diagram to compare the two. Look at the deal he's willing to strike to join Lennie and George's dream. Why might he be willing to strike such a deal? What makes him back out? What does this tell you about Crooks's story? Create a document or image or powerpoint slide or presentation of some kind to share this with the class.
Group 6: Crooks' Bunk as a Symbol: Steinbeck develops several symbols and symbolic uses of language in this chapter. In fact, it's possible that the setting of the chapter itself is symbolic. The idea of not being "welcome" or "wanted" shows up several times i nthis chapter. Where isn't Crooks welcome? Why? How does this make him feel? Why doesn't Crooks want Lennie in his room? Why does he give in? How does Crooks react when Candy comes in? What about Curley's wife? Look closely at what Candy says to her on page 79 and what Crooks says to her on page 80. What reasons do all four characters have for being in Crooks' bunk? What do you think the bunk itself might represent? Create an image or document or powerpoint slide or presentation of some kind to share this information with the class.
All group activities monitored through Class Dojo.
