How To Create Text Pop Ups In Microsoft Word

Suzanne S. Barnhill

The term "word equation" is certainly nonstandard. What the video is referring to is a field. In this case the AutoTextList field is being used in an innovative and ingenious way. For convenience, the syntax of the field used is:

AutoTextList "Display Text" \s NoStyle \t "Popup Text"

Interestingly, when you update the field, the "Display Text" argument is lost, but the popup still works.

It works for me in Word 2013. Perhaps something has changed in later versions.

Thank you for your interest. I'm totally baffled by it, personally, and unfortunately, lack the skills or knowledge to figure it out. I've also checked the web with a very extensive search in hope of perhaps being able to find some of simple, MS Word compatible tool, app, add-on or the like, via which I could accomplish this; but no luck. VERY frustrating.

What about it don't you understand? You paste that string into your document, substituting your desired display text and popup text, select the whole thing and press Ctrl+F9 to convert it to a field, then F9 to update it.

Sorry. What I meant was simply, I don't understand why it doesn't work for me. I followed instructions exactly; tried it several times.

I can confirm that the popup text works in Word 2013 but does not work in Word 2016 or 2019. The Microsoft developers probably thought that the fact it ever worked was an oversight and disabled it.

As far as I'm aware, there are only two other mechanisms in Word for displaying a popup on mouseover. One is the bookmark-and-hyperlink method mentioned in the title of this thread (and there's nothing wrong with that!), and the other is a rather complex method using a macro to track the mouse position.

Problem is I don't want to use the bookmark and hyperlink method, as initially mentioned - as I don't aesthetically or theoretically want the click-to-follow-link text that gets attached, as "it's not meant to be a link" - and secondly, I'm unfortunately unfamiliar with macros, etc., and working with them. Hense, guess I'm just plain SOL (if you'll pardon the expression, please); as evidently, the developers would rather disregard the desire of those Word 2016 or 2019 customers who would prefer to be able to do this via either the method we've been discussion, or alternatively, via the utilization of an add-on, which they've also apparently chosen not to avail to their customers for that purpose, either. And I know from my web search that there's a lot of us out there, who would be grateful for such. Hence, I defer back to the frustration. Now I'm going to begin researching competitor's products.
